Being a hipster in Rome

As most of you will probably know: me and Matthias went to Italy! Pizza, pasta and ‘gelato’, yes please! This were also the main ingredients of our trip. The main attractions of Rome which will pop up in your mind will be the Colosseum and the Trevi Fontain. However, we tried to do some more local – think hipster – stuff in the capital of Italy.

One of those less touristic areas is ‘Madonna dei Monti’. Here, you’ll find some cool menswear shops and local restaurants & bars. The Monti neighborhood is also called the ‘Hipster neighborhood of Rome’, which made us quite conviced to avoid the thousands of Chinese tourists wandering around. Before checking out the stores, we went eating at Urbana 47. People come here to hang out from brunch until dinner with a great natural juice or an excellent glass of wine. Next to serving pizzas and pastas, they have some killer salads – which we ordered to compensate the amount of ice cream yet to come.

A cool urban concept store to visit is Suede, which is only 3 minutes away from Urbana 47. Locals come here to check out the latest sneakers, caps and t-shirts. Next to this, you’ll find some indie and urban magazines.  Nevertheless, we searched almost 30 minutes, because the entrance is really tiny and the Italian locals were only speaking their native tongue. The only answer we got was no comprendo. Well, me neither.

A second area to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner between the locals is Trastevere. We went to Baylon, where they serve Instagram friendly food –  pancakes & waffels –  but also Italian pasta. If you’re still having a space left after your main course, try the cheesecake! It’s also great to have dinner in one the cosy surrounding streets.

The butcher is a store just 2 minutes away from Baylon. They sell both women- and menswear. It’s offering sneakers and sportswear, but also casual brands like Selected Homme.

Give these two neighborhoods a try, if you want to check out the less touristic side of Rome. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
